Why?
For over three years, JPortal has been serving Volusia County Schools as an alternative to VPortal. At the start of this year, this move would have been unthinkable. But when JPortal was blocked on February 23rd, 2024, many of JPortal's features had to be removed to comply with VCS mandates. Unfortunately, it was our only choice to restore JPortal.
It has been a little while since then, but until recently, JPortal hasn't changed much. The forced restrictions on JPortal acted as an impenetrable barrier between JPortal and new innovative features. Despite this, JPortal remained committed to its core values of performance, privacy, and user experience. Jeff Groups announced that JPortal would be archived in June 2024, at the end of 2023-2024 school year.
What now?
Even though we planned on discontinuing JPortal on June 1st, we pulled the plug on development a little earlier, May 29th, 2024. The website will still function until June 2026. When the time comes, JPortal will be password-protected and will no longer be accessible to the public. On school-issued devices, VPortal will be the only option beyond this point.
On personal devices, there will be a mobile app available for JPortal that you will be able to download starting in 2025. It will be first available on the App Store on Apple devices, but we have an Android app planned. It may additionally be available on Windows as well (school devices will still NOT be able to use it). Even on school Wi-Fi, personal devices will be able to use the JPortal app. This is because JPortal itself will be hosted on-device. Links will fully function, and as long as the sites that power online features aren't blocked by Volusia County Schools, all features should be fully functional as long as there is an internet connection.
